  • Abstract:
The Line of Balance (LOB) method is not widely used in the construction industry even though LOB is the best fit for repetitive construction projects. In this research a tool named ALISS was developed that solves most of the problems associated with LOB applications. ALISS is an acronym for Advanced Linear Scheduling System and it aims to create a model that can utilize the tools of Information Technology to the fullest extent. This is accomplished by creating a system that is flexible enough to accommodate an Internet application. ALISS has two versions, namely a stand alone and a server version. It has also a web module for inputting data. ALISS is programmed using visual basic and visual basic script languages. It utilizes MS Access and SQL server as a data repository. ALISS utilizes a new learning model. An approach to formulate learning rates is proposed in this study that starts by identifying historical learning rates of typical construction activities and then adjusts them by including the impact of relevant factors such as number of operations in one unit, activity complexity and job and management conditions. In this process, the fuzzy set theory is used to develop production rules to treat both factual and uncertain information. Learning reduces project duration and overall resource requirements. The end product of the study presented in this dissertation is an advanced linear scheduling system that not only accommodates all LOB requirements but also provides the latest technological developments as an embedded tool.
